Weekend getaways from Cincinnati within three hours

Two hours from Cincinnati gets you sandstone arches in Kentucky, cabins in the Hocking Hills or the wooded ridges of southern Indiana, all without taking a Friday off. Here are the five we keep going back to, with drive times and the stays that are cheaper than normal right now.

Where to go

  1. Hocking Hills

    2 hr 30 min from Cincinnati · 150 miles

Cabins with hot tubs, Old Man’s Cave

The best-known cabin area in Ohio, and it earns it. Old Man’s Cave, Cedar Falls and Ash Cave are a half-day walk apart. Cabins around Logan run from bare A-frames to hot tubs with no neighbours in sight. October books out weeks ahead.

  2. Red River Gorge

    2 hr 15 min from Cincinnati · 130 miles

Hiking, rock climbing, odd little cabins

Sandstone arches, cliff-top trails and some of the best rock climbing east of the Rockies. Drive in through Nada Tunnel, hike to Gray’s Arch, eat at Miguel’s with the climbers. Rentals around Slade lean rustic: treehouses, tiny cabins, hot tubs facing the woods.

  3. Yellow Springs

    1 hr 15 min from Cincinnati · 70 miles

    Closest and easiest

The shortest drive here and the one for a four-o’clock-on-Friday decision. Walk Glen Helen or Clifton Gorge, then spend the afternoon in a village of 3,700 with more coffee, record shops and street life than it has any right to.

  4. Brown County

    2 hr 15 min from Cincinnati · 125 miles

    Fall colour and Nashville, Indiana

Brown County State Park is Indiana’s biggest and the reason to come in October, when the ridge roads turn red and Nashville fills up. The rest of the year it is quieter and cheaper, with Bloomington twenty minutes away for dinner.

  5. French Lick

    2 hr 45 min from Cincinnati · 150 miles

Spa weekend, two grand old hotels

Two grand old resort hotels, French Lick Springs and West Baden with its domed atrium, plus a casino and golf. The pick for a slow weekend built around a pool, a spa and a long dinner. Rentals near Patoka Lake are the cheaper way in.

Which one should you pick?

First cabin trip from Cincinnati? Go to Hocking Hills. It has the most cabins, the most trails and the least to figure out. Red River Gorge is the better weekend if you would rather hike hard and eat pizza than sit in a hot tub.

Yellow Springs is for one night or a last-minute Saturday. Brown County is best in October and fine the rest of the year. French Lick only makes sense if the hotel is the point.

How to keep it cheap

Compare the total, not the nightly rate. Cleaning fees hit two-night stays hardest, and a $160 cabin with a $40 fee beats a $140 cabin with a $110 one.

Cabins still open on a Thursday for the coming weekend often drop their price. That is what the thumbnails above show. If nothing looks right, check again Sunday night for the following weekend.

Common questions

How far is Hocking Hills from Cincinnati?

Roughly 150 miles and about two and a half hours by car. Logan, the main town, is the far end of that.

What is the closest weekend getaway to Cincinnati?

Yellow Springs, at about 70 miles. It is the only one of the five under two hours. Red River Gorge and Brown County are around two and a quarter; Hocking Hills and French Lick closer to two and a half or more.

Where are the cabins with hot tubs near Cincinnati?

Hocking Hills has the most by a wide margin, then Red River Gorge. Brown County has some. Yellow Springs has very few, and French Lick is more about the hotel spas.

When is the best time to go?

October for Brown County and Hocking Hills, when the leaves turn and everything books out. Late spring for Red River Gorge, before the humidity. Yellow Springs whenever the weather is good. French Lick is an indoor weekend, so the season barely matters.
