The Hill Country wine town, with more than fifty tasting rooms along US 290 and a Main Street of German bakeries and antique shops. Enchanted Rock is twenty minutes north for a sunrise scramble. Book early for peach season and Oktoberfest.

Swimming holes, cypress trees, quiet cabins
Blue Hole and Jacob’s Well are the draw, both reservation-only in summer, and the Blanco River cabins under the cypress trees are the reason to stay over rather than day-trip. The square has enough for a slow morning and not much more.

Dripping Springs

Closest: distilleries and Hamilton Pool
Close enough to book on the day. Hamilton Pool needs a reservation and is worth it; Pedernales Falls is easier to get into and nearly as good. Between them are a dozen breweries, distilleries and ranch venues, several of which rent cabins for the weekend.

Lake Travis

Lake houses, boat days, sunset decks
The lake house weekend. Rent on the water around Lago Vista, Spicewood or Volente, get a boat or paddleboards, and watch the sun go down from the deck. Levels swing a lot, so check the lake level before booking a place for its dock.

New Braunfels

River tubing, Gruene Hall, Schlitterbahn
Float the Comal or the Guadalupe, dry off with a beer at Gruene Hall, the oldest dance hall in Texas, and take the kids to Schlitterbahn if there are kids. Summer weekends are packed. Spring and fall are the same river with half the crowd.
Which one for which weekend
Couples: Fredericksburg or Wimberley. Groups: a Lake Travis house, which splits the cost well and keeps everyone in one place. Families or anyone under thirty: New Braunfels and the river.
Dripping Springs is the one for a single night or when you decided at lunch. It is close enough that a Saturday-only trip still feels like you went somewhere.
Summer is the expensive season
Hill Country rentals price for June and July. The same cabin in October, when the weather is better, often runs a third less. If summer is the only option, book the swimming hole reservations before the stay, not after.
Compare the total including cleaning fees, and read reviews for whether the advertised river or lake access is actually walkable from the house.

What is the closest weekend getaway to Austin?
Dripping Springs, about 25 miles and 35 minutes west on US 290. Lake Travis is the same distance to the northwest. Wimberley and New Braunfels are under an hour; Fredericksburg is about an hour and a half.
Are there cabins near Austin with a hot tub?
Yes, mostly around Wimberley and Dripping Springs, with a good number near Fredericksburg. Filter for it and check recent reviews. In Texas heat the tub matters more in winter than summer.
Do I need a reservation for Hamilton Pool or Jacob’s Well?
Yes for both. Hamilton Pool takes reservations year-round and sells out weeks ahead in summer. Jacob’s Well requires a swimming reservation from May to September. Blue Hole in Wimberley also needs one in summer.
When is the best time for a Hill Country weekend?
March and April for bluebonnets, October and November for cooler weather and lower prices. Summer is for the rivers and the lake, and only really the rivers and the lake.
